Katong/ Joo Chiat

In Katong/Joo Chiat, you can immerse yourself in the unique culture of the Peranakans, a people of mixed Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage. Local shops tend to reflect this heritage, offering art, apparel and handicrafts inspired by Peranakan custom. The culinary offerings here support this culture as well, with items like laksa being especially popular. Laksa is a spicy noodle soup made with coconut milk, and locals and visitors alike tend to love it.

When you visit Katong/Joo Chiat, you can also enjoy serene surroundings by the coast. The beach and East Coast Park is easily accessible from this neighbourhood, allowing you to find fun in the sun in between your Peranakan shopping and cuisine experiences.
